Elko, Nevada to Rancho Cordova, California – 11/16/2014
NOVEMBER 16, 2014 (Sunday)
Woke up to 19 degree weather. We had a wonderful breakfast at the Best Western, Elko. They had lots of hot stuff like sausage, biscuits, eggs, burritos, and also all kinds of cereal, muffins, etc. Very nice. We got on the road around 10:30 AM but only went a few blocks and stopped for gas. It was funny because I wanted to clean the windshields and tried to get the windshield washer/squeegee thing out of the frozen bucket. Good thing I’m still strong but it took a little bit to break it free from all the frozen soapy water.
The drive today was very long, a little over 400 miles. The weather was clear but crisp. Before we left the Best Western we had already Pricelined a room in Rancho Cordova (near Sacramento). We got a Marriott for $60.00 (with taxes it was about $75.00). I had also emailed some friends in hopes they would be available for a quick visit. We heard back from them and made arrangements to have dinner at their place tonight around 5:00 PM.
We stopped again for gas in Lovelock, Nevada. We also used this as a potty stop. We didn’t stop again until a little past Reno. We stopped at a nice grocery store called Scolari’s to get a dessert to bring for dinner.
We got to Carolyn and Chris’ home right around 5:00 PM. So wonderful to see them. Carolyn, and her twin sister Marilyn, have been my friends for over 50 years. Hard to believe. Their parents took me in and helped me out a lot when I was young. Very wonderful people. Marilyn and her husband, Bill, showed up a few minutes later. So good to see everyone. Love them so. We always laugh so much and talk so much. Fun. They all looked great. So glad they were able to make room in their schedules to include us. Carolyn and Chris had made a wonderful meal of beef stew, chicken, asparagus, cole slaw, and stuffed mushrooms. Everything was really good. Then to top it off they had a delicious berry pie.
Hated to leave but had to. We left around 7:30 PM and headed to our hotel in Rancho Cordoba, about 15 miles from Carolyn and Chris’ home. We got to the Marriott at around 8:00 PM. Check-in was quick. I was excited about getting this four star hotel but was very disappointed in it. The room itself was very large and nice but you had to pay for internet, no breakfast, and they want money for everything. Also, amidst all the upscale, there was a heavy plastic shower curtain in the bathroom.
Anyway, that was our day. Hope yours was great!
